We’re in our first week of a lockdown here in the UK and I’m learning to be a bit more flexible with my routine.

What’s really important to me is that I at least keep some form of routine and to try not to worry about things that haven’t happened yet. (This is very difficult – but a work in progress)

As part of the lockdown guidelines, we are allowed one form of exercise outside a day. With the lockdown in mind, I’m keeping my runs around the 3-4 mile mark and to only run from my home.

I may get up early at the weekend and run a 10k, but I am reluctant to run any further. We’re on lockdown for a reason, and are very fortunate we can still do this. Some countries such as New Zealand and France, have banned this completely.

With more people at home and choosing to opt for a daily walk, it often means that I’m seeing more people on my runs.

This does mean it’s more difficult to do training work such as hill sprints and intervals… I am reluctant to run to the park after hearing that loads are using the space to have picnics!

It’s a confusing time for everyone, but with others safety and wellbeing in mind, it’s important as a runner that I’m flexible in changing my routes if required. I saw another runner yesterday and after seeing me, he changed direction.

Whilst I don’t think it’s necessary to change direction completely, we can all be a little more mindful. Cross the road, and if it’s clear, run at the side of the road if it is safe.

Running for the pure joy of it is my aim now, especially with this lovely sunshine. Typical it’s like this when we’re in lockdown!

I am still doing strength work with my weights and trying to do yoga… I’m on week 3 now and it’s getting a bit too complicated for me! I love the simple moves and don’t want to get twisted up in a ‘Birds of paradise’ pose!

Remember, there’s always going to be some dickheads but the majority of us do care. Try not to let them get you down. Speak to a friend or family member about it to get it out of your system. That usually helps me haha.

Please be kind, this is a stressful time for us all.
